How did he come to this conclusion?
Having both IMO there are differences that make me wonder how one can be misdiagnosed. With that said I'm sure the treating physcian makes all the difference there.
Considering that you've been treated with RA medication that would be one big misdiagnosis.
What about your BW & the obvious such as the joints?
Via my doc RA triggered Fibro. Now knowing how some view Fibro call it what you want but it's something very real & painful. Yet not the same as RA. The areas & type of pain alone are very different.
I get there are symptoms that are the same.
Yet not enough for a medical doctor to confuse the two for that length of time.
I'm always shocked at the way some doctors practice but my friend that is a doozy.
I'm thrilled you were told no RA but confused as heck at how it was misdiagnosed for 2 yrs.
I'd be super peeved & grateful at the same time. Considering what it takes to obtain medication, cost, side effects, risks & so on......
Are you convinced it's Fibro?
I'm sorry you had to go through that & truly hope your on the right road.

Wow! Same Doctor? How are you feeling about this- mentally and physically? I'm assuming you are off your RA meds, can you feel it? What is the plan of action now? I don't have fibro, but I've read and heard it can be painful.

rite? my rheumy was dr. sylvester... he retired in february. he never wavored in diagnosis. my grandmother went to him for her ra for 30 yrs. i took prednisone methotrexate injections plaquenil remicade infusions and embrel. nothing helped my joint pain. i got into a rheumy in portland maine on 12/28/15. and she is extremely knowledgable. the only thing that swells is my fingers. my only lab that was abnormal is my crp, and vectra score. so, when i saw this new rheumy, she sat with me for an hr and half, listening to my history. she did her physical exam. she checked the pressure points for fibro and i about jumped off the table. noone had ever checked that. she told me at the end of visit she wont treat me for ra. she dont think i have ra. she thinks its fibromyalgia!! i was flabergasted....i still am. she gave me a script of gabapentin. i am on prednisone 4mg day due to adrenal insufficiency related to taking prednisone for two yrs. i am so upset about the misdiagnosis.... my symptoms have been joint pain worst in hips widespread too....fatigue and malaise... muscle aches...all over. pain so bad after one yr of suffering i resorted to opiates. i went to boston in jan. for a second opinion and he said ra. i know they often go together. anyway... i am tearful and confused. M

I'm not a doctor by any means, but you can have both....I do. I hurt all over, every place I touch. But my rheumy believes I have RA, too, based on my symptoms. I didn't even have the blood work to prove it.

You said you have two blood tests that are abnormal. That would be a big red flag to me. I think I'd get a different opinion. Also, did the meds help you, and are you worse being off them? That would tell a lot, too.

I feel that you need another opinion on this one.

This has been on my mind.
Thinking removing you off meds will open that door for symptoms to worsen in the RA arena.
That alone may play a big role in finding an answer.
It may not be needed but perhaps keeping notes on any changes in your pain & symptoms while off RA treatment.
Hope you have that appointment. Cannot imagine how stressful this must be.

Sammy, thank you. I have been off ra meds since Feb. When I had surgery. The symptoms remained same until about six wks ago. I lost my primary care Dr my rheumy amd my pain management Dr all this summer... It's been tough. To top it off imgot my date for disability hearing.... But have been working...to keep the house. So may get compensation for the first yr I was out of work. I met new pain Dr year. He said gabapentin isn't effective... I am getting dizzy from it. And tired. I am on pain meds to allow me to work. He wouldn't MRI me either....will ask primary Dr next wk. I hurt with deep pain everywhere. Incredibly worse. And jaw upper and lower on one side.,.ouch. Do I keep taking gaba?? I def have fibro now. Ra? Idk....help guys...I could wrote on fibro forum...but u guys I trust. Second yr on opiates....ugh.

I take it this was someone other than your rheumy? What kind of specialist was this?

I went to one of the leading hospitals in the country....The Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC......and the surgeon demanded I see one of their rheumies. This woman was mean from the first moment I saw her and her official diagnosis...malingering. That's a psych diagnosis of someone pretending to be sick to a really sick degree but does not self inflict injuries or illness like someone with Munchausen Syndrome. When I asked her if she was telling me that my rheumy back home was an idiot who couldn't tell if I had RA, she said yes.

Big docs in big hospitals can be wrong.

They can also tell you something you know is wrong as a way of "blowing you off"...dumping your case. I am seeing and hearing about this more and more. The doc doesn't want your case for any of an alarming number of reasons(many won't take Medicare anymore but won't say that) so they tell you something you know is not true just to make you go away. Possibility?

Consider "blowing off" this new Dx.
