I remember having a bone density test which showed ostepenia when I was on a high does of prednisone. My RD had written me a perscription for fosamax but after the results he said I didn't have to take it. I remember being concerned about taking it.

Did u have a dexascan? Or the ankle type test. Fosamax can have other side effects also like gi bleed eroding of the esophagus. For me i also have osteopenia but rather than taking Fosamax i will take calcium. Fosamax had to change their advertising cuz they said it could prevent fractures and it doesnt. I worry about this too. I was supposed to have a bone density test soon, before a six-month appointment with my endocrinologist, but when I called to schedule, the joint had closed.

My rheumy told me that since I'm on long-term low-dose prednisone she is supposed to offer me bisphosphonates, but seemed happy when I said no. Between mild Graves' Disease and thye pred, my endo is keeping a close eye on bone density.

Don't know if it is just that I take enough drugs already or what, but I feel pretty reluctant to start with this class of drugs.

I did have a dexa scan which showed osteopenia. I am on prednisone with no end in sight... I do not want to add a med that has side effects and is questionable on efficiency. My endocrinologist said that calcium supplements are now being tied with heart disease. He wants me to take my calcium by food. Which is hard when dieting, to get it in. Thanks for your replies!

Yes it us a catch 22. You take one med for this and they say it causes that. Cant win. But Fosamax can also cause erosions in the esophagus and stomach bleed etc but u take it to strengthen bones. But good luck

I know my grandfather and grandmother both were on Fosamax for many years when they were in their 80's and neither one sustained fractures so did help them and my grandfather fell a few times the last few years he died about 4 yrs ago at 94 yrs old and did not have any GI issues with

Deanma - spinach and more spinach! Wa-la! Plenty of Ca while dieting. Do eat some of it blanched or boiled, aids in absorption. Also watch Mg. There's no good diagnostic test for its level - but lots of meds deplete it as well. Depleted Mg also impacts bone density - along with a lot of other systems. So add tree nuts to diet.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis several months ago. I had only been on a small (5 mg) of prednisone for six months so I don't think that caused it. My mother also has it but she was 20 years older than me when she was diagnosed. My doctor said I was young for it, I'm in my 50's. I have it in my spine, hips and wrists. Actually those were the only spots they checked so who knows..........it could be all over.
Doctor prescribed Fosamax with D and my insurance company denied coverage. I emailed my doctor about it but never got a response months ago. I started taking calcium and D3 OTC until I see her at the end of this month.
