I don't disagree with you about splitting hairs - to a publisher, they are likely to zoom in on "multi-media", "survivor contributed content" and stop there. But the differences are relevant I think from an intellectual property perspective. Given that, I doubt a publisher is going to only consider who proposed the book first. Ideas seem to come in waves. I know with start-up ideas this happens. It is one reason why VC's will usually refuse to sign non-disclosure agreements. The chances of getting a similar proposal on their desk from an entirely different party is not small. I suspect it also happens in books.

My concern is that a publisher looking at the two proposals is likely to ask is "which is more likely to actually get written and then sell". If you don't already have a firm deal, you may want to be prepared to explain to a potential publisher some combination of why (a) the market can sustain both both books (b) your book is more sellable even if the market can sustain only one (c) your book and hers really sell into different, albeit overlapping, markets. And even if you do have a deal, your insights into these issues might help them come up with a better marketing plan for your book.

Matt- how many have you received so far? Did you reach your goal?

I received nine letters. (James, I never got the one you intended to send me). I have some others on their way, although they won't be eligible for the honorarium.

I was hoping you had gotten more, but I am glad there are more on the way. Maybe, with more time, some people may feel like they can tackle this. Maybe extend the deadline for the honorarium or just keeping bumping this thread so the invitation never goes away :)

A poem is fine, but since poetry is so subjective to taste it may fare better as a letter.

You know..I actually thought about placing a fancy stamp inside the envelope but because it was from xmas i thought they would give me nice ones to put on. But no...no fancy stamps for airmail anymore. I miss getting mail from abroad with ten stamps on..all different :)

I get the same fear I had when writing the letter whenever I am the first person to welcome a new survivor or the first one to respond to their questions.

Today in particular there was a post I felt that fear...OMG what if I dont say the right thing. I am beginning to find that the very act of admitting aloud that I don't have all the answers tends to relax me into the response. It seems to unlock this more understanding, more connected part of me. Strange...but I am glad I have found a way to access it.
