Actually, for the next printing, I'd love to have my name associated with my letter from the day before. It is to "Dear Sweet Child", but is unsigned...that was me. I am also Chandler, on page 210. THAT is not an editor issue as much as me and my pen name trust issues. But, I am happy to be me, and happy to be included in the book at all.

I will suggest another, non-edit kind of thing...the 'boxes' to separate journaling from the book's text...when they are at the bottom of a page, but the journaling carries to the next page, the bottom and the top of the box should be left open so it is obvious the text belongs together. It occurs that way in some paces but not in others.

And, I was really SAD to see that you did not include YOUR artwork. Some of what I had written, you included in the book, BUT IT WAS AN INTERPRETATION OF YOUR ARTWORK. I was really hoping you had included it. (Just a thought).

haha can i point out my own typo? in the letter to myself i typed Instances instead of instance. there were a few others i caught throughout, but nothing major.

Ahhh...this could be dangerous ground with me Matt. I review medical records and reports day in and day out for a living....lucky thing is that I do not yet have my own copy in my hands. Interested in typos for "The Last Indian Wars"? That one I am fully loving, but my job has hazards (seeing typos jump out at me where ever I may be).

Not really for LIW; that book is pretty much a finished project. (most people don't know that RAR isn't my first book). I wrote LIW in my 20s, after I spent years all over the country meeting with tribal elders and activists, and participating in many Indian community struggles. Like RAR, I wanted to show them that all they had taught me meant something, and I would do something good with it.

Honestly, I'm just playing. I would never want to 'pick your work apart' unmercifully. There is too much of your heart and soul in BOTH works and I have never been much for playing the part of the vulture. That's something that actually costs me a great deal of time because I tend to allow many errors to slip by that my staff creates and just fix them quietly in the background, and praising them out loud for what is right about their work. Like you, they put so much into their work, that I refuse to pull it apart and have any part at all into making them feel discouraged in any way about that effort that they have placed. I just don't have it in me to make them feel badly in any way if I can help it...just like I couldn't really do that to you...I was just having a little bit of a jest with you yesterday when I posted that. Sorry that wasn't clear and it came out sounding like I was ready to re-edit something that was already complete and quite meaningful.

I understand; my wife/editor helped with RAR, but LIW was a solo effort at the time. And I knew you were teasing; I didn't take it any other way. I'm always teaseable; I'm into it, and not thin-skinned. :)

Just a small thought...maybe not fair since everyone doesn't have a copy of LIW...but in a way I compare you in my mind with the spear fishers. In your book (LIW) you tell of the spear fishers and how they take only what they need using the methods of old by spear fishing (which can't be an easy way to catch fish to begin with) and giving back to that same water by restocking the fish and caring for the land, all the whilst the 'neighboring' folk complaining of the amount of fish that the spear fishers take from the water (such a small % of the total!) and even dare to cause them harm and terrorize them while they do so - even though they have every right to fish to begin with. I see you as a spear fisher on DS (if this makes any sort of warped sense). See....maybe we are the fish and/or the river. You take from the river only what you need and restock with healthy thriving fish while caring for the hurting fish and land all the while being pelted and terrorized by the never-ending 'inbox' of new fresh hurts and those that feel them (more fish), as well as the misunderstanding of the 'neighboring' people while trying to do your best. Not to mention taking the hurts of the wounded fish onto yourself in the process. I am so thankful that you understand that everything has spirit and I am also thankful to have received this work Matt! Thank you for doing so much to help restock the river so to speak! So to me....although I have not yet opened RAR (although I ordered another copy yesterday), in a way, they seem connected even though the subject matter is so different. After all...looking deeply, everything is connected in some way. And I am ever so greatful that you are not thin-skinned...I sincerely doubt that a thin-skinned person could handle even a fraction of the pain that you take on vicariously through thost that you work with. I am ever so glad that you have a release, sweat box, therapy, journal, what have you. You are definitely a keeper fella!
