Given that two of my close associates are battling breast cancer, it's time to cut hair for charity!
I am willing to cut off my hair to raise money for charity. If anyone is willing to make a monetary pledge to support charity, please send me a message with your email and pledge amount. Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD)
The most common and potent ingredient found in most hair dyes is PPD, which is a chemical required to permanently infuse and darken your hair. PPD is listed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as a potential allergen where it's commonly known to cause allergic reactions like
* redness
* sores
* itching
* burning sensations
* headaches
PPD is also quite well known as a possible carcinogen (cancer causing agent) after oxidation with the developer like Hydrogen Peroxide or Ammonia required in most permanent hair dyes. A report from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggested that prolonged exposure to dark hair dyes might increase the occurrence of various forms of cancer ranging from
* non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
* Multiple myeloma
* Breast Cancer
* Leukemia
* Bladder Cancer
Most permanent hair dyes products contain PPD or its equivalent so think twice before you use any of these products.
"But hair coloring made it onto the Cancer Prevention Coalition's Dirty Dozen list of most harmful consumer products. Clairol's Nice and Easy permanent hair coloring, to be specific. Its stew of labeled carcinogenic (cancer-causing) ingredients include Quaternium-15, also a formaldehyde releaser; Diethanolamine; and Phenylene-Diamines.
Phenylenediamine in particular should be avoided. Using permanent and semi-permanent hair coloring regularly is strongly associated with increased risk of cancer, including Hodgkin's, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma and perhaps leukemia and breast cancer. The dye para-phenylenediamine (PPED), present in nearly all hair coloring products, was shown to be carcinogenic to the breast in 1986 following oxidation with hydrogen peroxide
which is exactly how the products are applied."
How can a known agent which contribute to breast cancer still be on the market????? Supposedly it's banned in Europe.
"The ingredient, para-phenylenediamine or PPD has already been banned in some European countries including France, Germany and Sweden."
