Renal Cell Carcinoma (Kidney Cancer) Support Group

Renal cell carcinoma, also known by a gurnistical tumor, is the most common form of kidney cancer arising from the renal tubule. It is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. Initial therapy is with surgery. It is notoriously resistant to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, although some cases respond to immunotherapy.

Has anyone done clinical trials with Sutent and chemo?

Not been in any trials but have been on Sutent since march 2012. My wife Julie has been reading about a trial called ARGOS or ADAPT where they make vaccine from your cancer, I think someone on this sight has been accepted to that trial. My wife has been my biggest advocate making sure I am getting the best care and treatment. She is also on this sight as JProchello

I have read about the vaccine. Our son is a biologist working with blood. He is very aware of this treatment and thinks it is really impressive. Right now, because my husbands cancer is so advanced we just need to get him started on treatment to shrink the tumors. Then the left kidney will have to be removed, the tumor in his lung and bicep will need to be removed at some point too. Does your wife have you on a special diet?

No special diet. Dr. at the mayo doesn't be it will change anything. I did a couple rounds of sutent before surgery and it kept everything stable but didn't shrink anything. after surgery the sutent started shrinking the mets in my lungs immediately.

Dave,
Did you have your entire kidney removed? I have read that they can take a portion of it but I am not sure where the tumor is in the kidney but it is HUGE! Do you take Sutent everyday?

I had a tumor the size of a softball in and around my right kidney, I didn't have a choice but even given a choice I would have had the entire kidney because the of cancer returning is much lower than with a partial. You should talk to your doctor about it and understand the options and do what is right for you. I also had tumors on both adrenal glands, the fatty tissue around the kidney and in the lungs. The also removed a bunch of lymph nodes but they came back negative for RCC. I am on the 50 milligram suten for 28 day and off 14 days.

Thank you Dave. So you didn't do any other chemo at first? It was just the Sutent right? He has a tumor on his (butt) that seems to be getting bigger now. He will start treatment this week or you'll be hearing about the crazy caregiver in CT!

I never had a tumor on my butt but I do have a rather large pain in the ass, named Julie. No other chemo, my doctor told us the RCC is resistant to chemo and radiation.
