A group for folks in all walks of life in any situation that want to expand their minds or occupy themselves away from a pressing matter and delve into reading good literature. Activities will include but are not limited to discussions on books read, recommendations on what to read, and critical analysis to broaden appreciation for old and new literature.

Dianetics

I tried reading Dianetics (I knew the Hubbards and liked some of his other stuff) but had to keep flipping back and rereading trying to not get confused. Never finished it and don't feel bad about it.
Anyone finish it or have other suggestions to avoid and why?

I read somewhere that Ron Hubbard was diagnosed with schizophrenia, perhaps that is why you found the book confusing.

Not to make light of such a serious illness. My daughter was first diagnosed with this dreadful disease but later she was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder which is schizophrenia and bipolar. Today she is attending school and her goal is to get a 4 yr degree in psychology with an added emphasis on the Spanish language. She would love to work as a caseworker for Spanish speaking folks who struggle with a mental illness

Was Hubbard psychotic and delusional while writing his book? Schizophrenia was considered an untreatable illness when he wrote the book and I can see why the group he created is so anti-psychiatry. Years ago all we could do with folks who suffered from this illness is lock them up and throw away the keys.

Due to my daughter's mental illness I became quite active as an advocate for the mentally ill. Treatment for schizophrenia have come a long way from the 1950's. I have an on-line friend who was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia and because of medication and theraphy and the strong advocacy from her parents she was able to go to nursing school and receive a 4 year nursing degree. She is now an RN working with the mentall ill.

I hope this helps clarify why Dianetics could be seen as a confusing book. The author was confused, delusional and very ill.

I would not be at all surprised if it happened to be true that L. Ron Hubbard was indeed schizophrenic. As horribly blasphemous as it might sound, many foundling religions, including Christianity, imbibe heavy reliance on 'visions' of angels, deities, and miracles. To me, this sounds like a mental illness.
Reliance on the aforementioned and purposeful oral and written myth to avoid cultural assimilation as in the case of Judaism and the rest of the Middle Eastern world in 'biblical' times.

All of it is quite fascinating, including the oddities of Scientology.
