My mommy crystal
And my brothers
Her strength tells me that I can be a survivor too...
My current hero[ine] is my friend Debbie Price. She is a Nurse who is battling Cancer with the dignity and poise that only a woman of faith can. Her youngest child is a Junior in High School, her two sons serve us proudly in the military. Debbie was diagnosed with colon, ovarian, and liver cancer early in 2007. I was at her home last week and she disclosed it is now in her right lung. Debbie works every day, she carries her chemo in a pump attached to a sling on her side. I was with Debbie as the physician for whom I worked told her it was cancer. Debbie and I held each other and cried. She said two things. "I just wanted to see Sara grow up", and "Will you sing at my funeral?".....My friend Debbie is the purest example I know of what a hero should be and I love her deeply. I am ashamed that I have such a difficult time with the life I lead, and Debbie looks cancer in the face, and refuses to let it win.
Like Kaye, I too consider Christ my Savior.
Lastly, but certainly not least, my husband. He has stood by my side, and pulled, picked up, or hoisted me over every hurdle we have faced. I have never been alone in this fight, and he it truly the only person I have complete trust in.
My grandmother, who was always an elder to me, taught me a lot about using art as medicine. She saw my worth when I didn't.
Bill Watterson. This isn't fandom; I actually regard him as a role model and source of philosophy and vicarious mentorship. He taught me about the importance of boys' love for creeks, frogs, tree houses, and comics books, the specialness of friendships, and the truth that money isn't wealth. I'm not overstating it to say that I'm a better father to my sons because of him.
Leonard Peltier, incarcerated Ojibway-Sioux activist.
Dennis Kucinich.
My sister, who helps run a Fair Trade company in Wisconsin, speaks several languages, and has traveled the world helping impoverished people undo their oppression from sweatshops. But don't tell her she made the list, or she'll never let me forget it.
Bill Miller. Perhaps the kindest man I have *ever* known, yet born of a painful childhood and a suicide survivor. My role model of what a man should be, bar none. Want to know my values? Listen to as much of Bill Miller's music (Native American folk-rock and traditional flute/powwow) as you can, and you'll see what teaches me.
I also failed to mention my brother-in-law Dave. He is the first person ever to hear of my rape. As a very young man, he did a very brave thing and disclosed my secret in time to save my life. He was only 18 at the time, but his character as a man was evident.
