Your post made perfect sense so no worries. I completely understand the mask. I mean everyone, even people who weren't traumatized, wear them. But I do think they take on a life of their own for those of us who have experienced major trauma. I let my mask of absolute independence and "strength" (not real strength, just what I thought of as strength at the time) rule my life for a very long time. It caused a lot of difficulties in my close relationships, not at work however.
I understand having a multitude of diagnoses as well. I started off with depression and ptsd. Now it's bipolar, ptsd and gad. Plus a handful of physical ailments like rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, both of which I'm fairly certain were exacerbated by my traumas. It definitely confuses your self-identity even under the best of circumstances. It took me a long while to re-discover myself. I had to go back to the beginning. The most important question I asked myself was, "When was I the happiest and most at peace in life?"
I wish you strength and perseverance on your journey of healing and self-discovery.
