As a child, I was raped by my father. I'm only 17 now but, after 10 years of self abuse, drug abuse, and alcohol abuse, I still dont feel as if I can get over something that seems so miniscule in my head. I've conqured addictions, but I cant rid myself of the nightmares and the fear that is taking over me. It makes it hard to do every day tasks. I have stress and trama enduced migranes because of these events. I finally told my mother about what had happened, but she told me I coulddo nothing about it now. I feel weak again. Powerless all over again... How do I get over this? or will I ever?

i'm so sorry that you had to go through something like that.....what your father did to you is not "miniscule" as you said.......unfortunatly what he did to you is a serious issue no matter if he's a family memeber or not and what he did is NOT okay......persnoally i don't think you ever "get over" a trauma like this, but you learn to live with it.....and conquering drug addictions is way different than conquering a trauma.....i would recommend therapy....i know it's helped A LOT of people, inclding myself, and it helps with all of the emotions and feelings that come after a trauma.....nightmares are really scary and i do all i can to be safe whenever i have nightmares.....i'll sleep with a light on, relax before i go to bed, self soothe while in bed, sleep with a teddy bear-i'm 20 so you're never too old-and i have a safe place in my mind that i go to whenever i feel unsafe....hope this helped!!! if you ever wanna talk, i'm here

Thank you. A lot of things you said really got me thinking. You're right that I may never get over it, and I am looking into therapy. Is there a certain type of therapy that has worked better than another? Should I go into rape counseling? I've thought about it and now that my mom knows, maybe it'll be easier to get help...But i'm afraid and ashamed to open up about it...How should I approach this?

i go to therapy once a week.....the therapist that i have specializes in trauma work....i did go to a rape counseling place before i came forward about it.....once i told my parents i was able to go to the place where i am now.....i would recommend going someplace where the therapist specializes in trauma work or rape counseling.....as for approaching the rape during therapy.....you ususally take a few sessions to get to know the therapist and talk to them....tell them about your childhood, current life, etc. etc......i told my therapist what happened, in full detail, in our fifth session i think......it was nice to get to know her first......i trusted her more....every therapist is different....some therapists may want the stor on the first session or whatever....let the therapist know that you've been raped and that;s the main reason you're seeking therapy....if they ask for the story and you're not ready to tell it, then tell them....don;t avoid telling the story, but accept that it may help.....after my appointment, my therapist had me do some grounding with her for about 5-10 minutes so i wasn't having flashbacks on the way home....
