By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
OK old friends that have been following the new and updated medications I have a question for you. Since my brain bleed in November my PCP is wanting to re-examine my use of Coumadin, Trying to keep my PT/INT between 2-2.3 is a real challenge. He has suggested maybe going onto Xarelto in place of the Coumadin. He recently went to a medical conference and the drug representative was telling all the doctors not to be afraid of this drug to control the anti coagulation in people who are taking Coumadin. So what have you all heard about this. I am not on the Coumadin for A-fib but because of a clotting disorder called lupus Anticoagulant or Antiphospolipid syndrome. Yes i have read lots of atricles about the drug Xarelto but i want your take on it.

Here is an updated Journal I did that discusses the new oral anticoagulants. Since I wrote it, Eliquis has been approved for DVT/PE prevention and treatment but other than that, the Pro's and Con's remain the same.

After almost 20 years of Couamadin use I made the switch to Xarelto back in December 2012 and have been pleased with it. There are still a lot of unknowns regarding effective dosage for each person (presently a one-size fits all dosage). I suspect in time, dosage will become individualized. Also, not a lot of information currently available about long-term side affects.
