Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
My wife got an email about preparedness and things to keep in your emergency medical kit, and this was included. I have not heard of this previously, anyone else?
Thoughts on it? Obviously wouldn't help internal bleeding, but perhaps exterior cuts....

When I Moutain Bike I carry the Quick Clot sporting sponge in my Camelback (just in case). I have yet to use it but it's there just in case.
Several years ago a fellow patient and Mountain Biker had asked me about the sponge (originally used in Emergency Room settings) so I did a little asking around. Now a days there are several product available as mentioned in the above link.

I bought a whole case, I have two in my mountain bike pack, two at work and two in the glove compartment of my car.
To tell you about them, I can't, So far, I have not used any.
Keep the rubber down, if you ride.

Although we got chased off the road from the rain last Saturday, living in So Cal we're out year round, last two weeks had a couple beautiful 50-60 milers up around the hills above Malibu.
Get the MTB out a few times a year, but not nearly enough (and just bought a SUP which will suck more time :) )

It's two pages long but I read it all and got a lot of information from it from people who actually are in the field.
These are comments made by firefighters and other responders who have to use methods to control bleeding at the site. The consensus was mixed, to say the least.
I've never used QuikClot but did ask my doctor when I was first dx'd with PE and was probably a little overly-worried about cuts. He said he wouldn't advise buying it and that pressure on the cut was just as good; but we WERE talking about someone (me) who wasn't going to get on a motorbike and roar off into the wilderness. :)
