By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Novocain and Coumadin?

On top of everything else, I have apparently either chipped a tooth or lost part of a filling! I'm one month on Monday from hospital release and the start of my 6 months on coumadin. I know to tell my dentist about my drugs, but does anybody know if i can use novocain or not? Growing up, my parents NEVER 'paid' for it, so it wouldn't be my first time without it... thanks

From what I have been told, it is not a problem to use it. You could always just call the dentist office and ask, that is what I did.

And you have had work done with out before? Wow! I get extreme anxiety as it is going to the dentist, so I can't even imagine!

Inform the dentist or his/her assistant of your meds. To my surprise, the barely post-adolescent dental assistant seemed to know more about the specific risk of anticoagulant than some doctors. Most dental work can be done while on Warfarin without excessive bleeding risk, but it would be prudent to know your INR, and verify that it is not higher than therapeutic, two days or less before the visit. Only the more drastic procedures such as root canal or extraction may require some alteration of your Warfarin therapy.

I have had two fillings, one of them involving major drill work, and both of then with the benefit of Novocain, since having been on Warfarin.

Just had a filling replaced a couple weeks ago. The dentist was less than concerned about my warfarin and I had no issues with the novocain at all. Really shouldn't be an issue. "Treat" yourself and go for the pain killers!
