Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
It's kind of fascinating how genes and environment interact . I took birth control pills when I was young with no problem and did plenty of long haul trips . When I did clot, it was after a long drive, and I was over 61 years old at the time. So I think the main cascade of events for me was, age+long drive+ FVL.
Like you, I feel very fortunate to have made a good recovery. I did have some right heart strain that resolved itself, and bilateral infarcts.
All the best to you!
Same with me that I'm guessing age+long drive+FVL caused my clots. I have been on quite a number of long drives over my life including being on a bus for up to 24 hours multiple times up to about 14 years ago. It seems my age was the final straw even though I think the long drive was the trigger.
Best wishes to you, too. Having two copies of FVL requires closer management for you I'm sure.
Interesting that my hematologist mentioned the medical community might be moving away from genetic testing on a first event and not do it until a second event. I was very surprised by that and I might bring that up on my visit in three months to better understand why, especially as it affects preventative treatment going forward.
