By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Ladies ... fibroids? Essure?

So, I saw my OB/GYN a couple weeks ago. I have a large uterine fibroid in an awkward place that could eventually lead to a hysterectomy. NOT good, since I can't take hormone replacements ... Oddly enough, we discovered the fibroid after doing a CT scan to look at the clots in my lungs.

My primary said that there may be a procedure to kill the blood flow just to the fibroid, but didn't know much about it. Anything would be better than a hysterectomy! Anyone here dealt with fibroids while on warfarin?

Also, I'm thinking about having the Essure procedure done to end my BC woes. My OB/GYN is experienced with clotting issues and is suggesting that if I do it, it should be done in the OR instead of in her office, just as a precaution. Again, wondering if anyone has had this done while on warfarin ...

Any input would be great!

I had a co-worker who had esure done. She is not on blood thinners. She was told about "break though bleeding" She ended up bleeding for 5 months. And it didn't work. Yikes.
She is now having a tubal at the end of this month. I ended my bc problems with the tubal. I'm not longer on coumandin. I passed on esure because I can't even wear earrings most of the time, I was afraid the I'm have a hugh problem with the esure.

The procedure your doc is talking about is Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). They inject a dye into your femoral artery to determine where the fibroid is receiving its blood supply from. Then then block that artery and starve the fibroid. It'll "die" and be reabsorbed by the body. It's minimally invasive and is an option but I would only recommend doing it if you are having symptoms from the fibroid (i.e. pain) AND if you do not intend to have children later. It doesn't make you infertile but it can cause complications with getting pregnancy due to the reduced blood flow to the uterus.

They don't have a lot of information on the long term affects of UFE as it's only been going on for about the past 4-5 years. They are still figuring out what could happen. It's done in radiology so follow up with them is craptacular. If you have a good OB/GYN and PCP then I would discuss it and follow up care with them. Radiology just does the procedure and then puts you out.

I have another fibroid now that happened after the UFE for my first one. I am not doing anything but popping Tylenol until I am off the warfarin. I'll decided what to do after that.
