By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Hi there. I had a probable DVT a couple of years ago although because it wasn't diagnosed by the hospital or by the doc it's hard to say. What is certain is that I collapsed with a PE a few months later & was lucky to survive. I came off the blood thinners about 8 months ago & have been fine. However, this week the same leg is painful, I'm limping & the circulation doesn't feel good. Worst in the morning. The calf, knee and even thigh give me pain all day. No swelling, redness or heat that i can tell. We are on holiday & away from home until next week. Don't want to panic but I am worried...

I wouldn't panic if I was you (because does panicing really help us? we all do it but it just causes us more grief) but unless you can think of another reasonable reason for the leg to be hurting I would go get it checked out. I know doing that away from home is not something I'd want to do but the risks of a DVT are something you probably don't want to mess around with.

I had a DVT in my thigh with no swelling, heat, or redness (actually I didn't even have pain until the PE) so I know that even if you don't have all the symptoms you could still have a DVT.

Once again can you think of anything else that would explain the pain?

If you're doing a lot of walking or any other "different" kinds of activity while you're on holiday, that could explain the leg pain.

Of course, if this is going to keep you from sleeping the rest of your trip, it might be worth stopping by an ER to get checked out.
