By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
I am interested in knowing if those of you who had DVT in leg along with PE have an increased size in that leg? I am 9 months out, have minimal swelling at top of ankle, have been wearing compression hose and have transitioned to compression socks over the past month and I just noticed my leg is bigger. It doesn't look like swelling, except in that one spot which has been there all along. I know some of you still wear compression socks a long time out from DVT so I am interested in your experience.
I had my first DVT in 2005, so I'm more than seven years out now. That clot is chronic and is still in my leg but it doesn't really cause me any issues at all. The leg is about an extra inch around from ankle to hip, but that's the only difference with it at all. No discoloration or pain or whatever.
I really only worse the compression stockings for about a month or so after diagnosis. Now, I wear them during car trips or plane rides, but that is about it. I guess I might have had less swelling if I'd been more diligent with the hose, but a lot of days they were more uncomfortable than helpful.
It is larger around, but no discoloration and the pain is minimal most days now. My clot was not there in Feb when I had another ultrasound, due to increased pain and a low INR.
