Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
I just fractured my sacrum (tailbone area) and I'm in quite a bit of pain, so my mobility is decreased. Has anyone taken any clot prevention measures (like warfarin or lovenox) for a similar injury?
Here is more information on my situation:
It's been almost 2 years since my DVT/PE following knee surgery. I tested positive for Factor V Leiden (Hetero). I did my 6 months of warfarin and have been off of it for 1.5 years. I now take aspirin daily.
The doctor I saw thinks my clotting risk is low, but suggested I make sure I take pain medication to keep me comfortable enough to keep moving.
Unfortunately, the pain meds that I take during the day are making me nauseated, so I am switching to only taking the pain meds at night (a different drug that make me very sleepy). The doctor I saw earlier was out today. The nurse I talked to on the phone was not concerned at all about clotting risk and suggested I try to get up often.
I'm not super concerned about my clot risk, but I am trying to be smart about it. Even with my knee surgery, I thought i was being active enough to prevent a clot, but that turned out to not be the case. The doctor I originally saw is back on Monday. I think I'll give her a call then, but I thought I would ask for thoughts from this group as well.

I understand how you feel. I had a similar accident about two months ago, however, I was also on Warfarin. You seem to be doing well without the Warfarin, so it sounds like the aspirin should be enough. I'm Also Factor V Het. To Be Safe, I would follow my instincts and go and see your Prim. Dr. You have nothing to lose by doing that and you can get a little peace of mind. Also, now you know what to look for, so pay attention to what your body is telling you.
