By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Ever since the day I ended up going to the ER, was diagnosed with a PE, and admitted (5/17/10), I have been having involuntary gasps with pain at the site of my PE that cause temporary pain comparable to the pain I had with every breath when I went to the ER. They ocur approximately twice per hour. I asked my PCP about this at my follow-up appointment post discharge, and asked the PA at an appointment I made a couple weeks after that, only to be told that it would go away with time. My PCP had told me that it was caused by my diaphragm, as it had gotten use to not breathing as deeply, but that was 1.5 months ago.

Is anyone else having this symptom? If so, how long does it last? Do you know what causes it? Is there anything that helps with it?

Had same symptoms as well. Not to worry, as this ( pain ) will disappear along your path of healing. Still have an occasional involuntary gasps of air, which are more infrequent, but with no pain now. I was d/c from hospital late April with same diagnosis. Should't be much longer. All will be well.

Thanks, John. I was beginning to think that this would be permanent. I read some post on other sites where people said they were having pain years later. I sometimes struggle w/ feeling sad and angry about having the PE and feeling like I will never feel normal again, then feel guilty because I should be happy that I am alive. I think some of this will go away as the pain lessens.

Believe in your recovery Lisa, as there is always a strong mind-body connection to our health. I know all of our situations are unique, but I am basically back to full strength with my activities. I'll remain on coumadin for another 3 months or so, but will end its use once given the clearance by my PCP. Anxiety can sometimes be our worst enemy. Do what is necessary to relax and calm your fears. Over time, as you begin to feel stronger, your anxiety will lessen, and you'll feel more confident in your daily activities and future. Take care and believe in your healing.

I am new to the group and I was diagnosed with PE about the same time. I have had occasional bursts of pain in my chest area and felt faint for just a milisecond. I have also dealt with shortness of breath and anxiety. I will tell you and everyone,I have been greatly helped by acupuncture. He is Tiwanese and uses reflexology to diagnose your problems and has been absolutely a miracle worker . I am also a great believer in prayer. Chay 144
