Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
Any one have tissue damage because of PE/coumadin?

Hi, it's been a while since I posted here I thought I would ask question now:
I hurt my elbow 3 mos into my DVT/PE coumadin treatment. I had small tears in my elbow tendon. I could not get treatment or surgery repair because I was on the blood thinners. 1 1/2 years later, I had surgery to repair elbow area. Tissue was extensively damaged. Has anyone had this type of serious after affect from the coumadin? It feels like I took so many steps backwards....after a long healing process I am now dealing with another long healing process in my arm.
Is this usual to have tissue damage after a major PE/DVT and coumadin treatment?
Does anyone know of any other support groups out there for this? Could the coumadin have lasting effects on my body and will I just heal super slow now?
Any comments suggestions are greatly appreciated!

A month after my surgery I was taken off Coumadin for thirty days (during which I had no trouble with my incision), had a d-dimer drawn and poof! Back on. Since going back on the incision site has been very tight and itchy--I think you're right and there is a connection.

This question was a lot different than I expected it to be....I do have tissue damage from the PE, but in my lung. I would not think that the coumadin would have had any effect on your elbow tissue damage, good circulation should improve healing if anything. I would question the decision of the doctors to not perform surgery if it was needed at the time your elbow was injured. It's not convenient to need surgery while you're on anticoagulation therapy, but sometimes it is necessary, and there are protocols in place for dealing with coumadin bridging and such. If your tissue damage is more extensive than it was originally, my tendency would be to blame it on having an existing and untreated or minimally treated injury present for so long. The longer something is left being unrepaired, of course the more potential for further damage, as there is extra stain put onto the good tissue, but of course that will wear on and injure that good tissue over time.

I would think it wouldn't be caused from being on the thinners, but from having to wait to long. I am going through the same thing, but with masses/cysts in my body that no DR will touch me for surgery right now because my PE's are that large. It is frustrating ..hang in there. Did they test you for any connective tissue diseases? Might want to ask about that.

Thank you all for your comments, it is very frustrating....no surgeon would touch it because of the PE and the coumadin....my husband is soo mad that they waited so long...now of course I am just left with the "what if's"......I am upset now that I have such a much longer recovery...thanks again for all the comments, certainly helps with validating my feelings...and helps to think that you all are out there with good thoughts!!
