By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Ok I have a question.......I am looking for feedback from people who had the flu or a cold within one month prior to getting your dvt's or pe's. thanks it will help a lot to take to my hemo dr next Friday.

I had a very bad cold and cough. I was put on steroid. To this day I think that caused my clot.

I was actually on prednisone at the time of my PEs, but that was because of ongoing sinus issues. I'd been on and off prednisone numerous times over the previous couple of years.

Caused all sorts of chaos at the hospital. Prednisone will do a number on your INR and I was just starting out on warfarin again. They didn't know how to adjust my doses, when I was starting warfarin, but stopping prednisone a few days later.

thank you all, I had a nurse ask me to do this as she has seen a spike in patients with PE,s in our area 27 in the last two weeks, as young as 15 right up to my old age :), she said everyone of them had either a cold or flu at admission or one month prior, she believes it could be viral and she thought of me because I had a horrible cold when I was admitted too, so I will be bringing this up with the hemo dr on Friday. Too many admissions she said and no other reasons for the blood clots. I will let you know how I make out but after talking to her she said she was shot down for her theory's but its almost an epidemic when our population is 90k, thanks again will keep you informed :)
