PTSD Supporters Community Group
This is a group where family and friends of those with PTSD can gather support with one another and share advice...and much more. It is not easy living with and.or understanding our loved ones with PTSD...I hope this group can help make that easier!

Hello, I new here and need some thoughts and opinions.
I have a daughter who suffers from PTSD from a rape she had at age fourteen. She is now in her late 30's.
The man that raped her raped her for one full year, by drugging her and telling her he would kill her family if she told anyone.
The man was sent to prison and was also charged in other rapes as well. He is out now, but my daughter keeps tabs on his every move through the internet.
My daughter at that time already had ADD, OCD, and had just had surgery to correct a birth defect on her legs which was traumatic within itself as she had to relearn to walk, which could not be corrected until she was eleven years old. She was teased terribly until that time. So she had terrible low self esteem before the rape took place.
As an adult, last year she got cancer of the thyroid, and a hysterectomy. So between all that she has mood swings, and she continually obsesses on cancer. And since the surgery for her cancer her PTSD has magnified considerably. She gets flashbacks and terrible mood swings. She tells me she does not believe in God as she asks how a God could let something like her rape happen?
She managed to finish college, she got her BA with a 3.7 grade average. But now her anxiety is so up there due to all the surgeries she just cannot seem to function. She is unable to even get her home in order and she gets help from her older daughter to get her 9 year old to school on time, as she cannot organize herself.
Yesterday she told me that she hates her life and she wished she could end it. She also told us she had made many mistakes and has in the past chosen abusive partners, and now she hates all men and she is angry with the whole world including her parents. So she has volunteered to go into in house treatment for a ten day assessment to get her meds straight and counseling at our pleading.
Sorry for the long thread. I am so worried about her, she is going to try to get a disability because she is sure she will not be able to function in the working world. Which has been a on going problem forever. My husband and I support her, which had caused much friction in my marriage.
I have joined this group to learn more about her PTSD. I need to support her, and get some kind of understanding of this condition to go forward. I start counseling tomorrow for myself , as now my anxiety level and depression is off the wall over all this. My husband refuses to go, so I am going for my own mental health.
Thank you for those who took time to read this long thread, any thoughts?
Hugs,
Kasandra

Know you and your hubby are doing right by your daughter. You have to take things one day at a time.
I see why your daughter has post traumatic stress. She probley suffers with fear that it will happen again. I don't have any kids but I do have a parent and few other family members who is suffering with it. Seeing a loved one with pstd is very painful.it's not that you try to live their live and for get about yours but you do try to be supportive of that loved one. I suffer with that myself because of different experiences I've had myself. When I try to tell this parent about why I can understand them, they don't seem to believe me but it's strange when their counselor say the same thing I've said at home. Kasandra, I did not mind reading your post at all because I can relate to in many ways.....
Here is an update on today. It is Saturday 8:55 am. I reread your post again and saw that it is really familiar with my life. My mother is suffering with post traumatic stress from different abuses when she was a kid, now that she is 79 young, the idle thoughts are really affecting her like no one's business. It affects her moods very bad, in fact when she was admitted into the hospital last weekend, they let her talk with a person for her talk to. After they spoke with her, they told her that she has post traumatic stress. I wished they never told her because of the fact she thinks they are calling her mentally ill or crazy. Honestly she is not really like this, only when she is triggered off by something like threats, or something that reminds her of the past. Example she received a phone call from someone in Ohio (the only person I know who lives there is my brother and my dad. My dad has a speech problem like myself0. I know that the pstd your daughter is experiencing is causing her life to be a living hell. I hope she don't have any children, why I said that is because they probably hate seeing their mom like that, the pain is worse because there is nothing they could do to help her.
I had a few people say to me that I'm only being depressed because of my mom but that's not true. I hate seeing my mom hurt but there is nothing I can do, I know that but I'm unhappy with the fact that the medical field had really caused our lives to be the way it is, A LIVING HELL. Right now I'm discouraged and sad because of the fact how it has our home where our home don't look like a home where people live in.
I feel ????????????????
Sorry that this is long but I'm just so unhappy inside.
