Vestibular System

Has anyone been told that they have a dysfunction Vestibular system? Your vestibular system has a lot to do with your balance. I saw an ENT a few weeks ago and he ordered a VEMP test and according to the technician my left side was not responding. She told me that is probably the reason I am so dizzy and complain of my world swaying.

Sorry your left side is not responding. What interesting information, especially for those of us whose world is swaying. Something to get checked out! What was the test like? Was it expensive? Is your doctor proposing something to fix it?

Im going for testing next month as I still suffer with balance issues. Were going to figure out if its vestibular, my moneys on cerebellar

Sea - the test was not bad at all. they put headphones on you and electrodes like EEG cables on your neck and one on your forehead. You have to turn your head as far to the right/left as you can and they put sounds thru the headphones at different frequencies. the information is then sent to a computer and comes out on a grid. Both sides should show close to the same on the grid. That is how they test. The doctors are trying to find out why I have drainage from my ear nightly. They thought the leak was near the ear but CT showed it isn't so next step is to a Anterior surgeon to focus on the forehead/facial area for the hole. I have insurance (right now anyway) and the test was somewhere around $300-400. The results of my test usually go along with a leak near the ear but since he didn't find one, he is afraid that the dysfunction is damage due to the central nervous system. I have an appointment on 7/1 with the next doctor. I have to travel 3 hours to Boston for these doctors because no one local would take my symptoms of IH seriously enough.
Mary - not sure what you mean about cerebellar instead of vestibular. I have my next project to research now to figure out what you mean.

Your cerebellum is your balance center, I one had cerebral herniation due to high untreated pressure for years. Intially they dx chiari malformation, but because the tonsils retracted with stable reduced pressures this is what we now know, I also have ear drainage, they are narrowing this down finally to vestibular or cerebellar damage.

Mary - What type of doctor dx this problem? I have this feeling that my head is drifting back all the time. Like I have to constantly straighten my head or I might fall backwards. It happens even when I am sitting.

Any Dr. or in my case, a center specializing in balance disorders. Usually multi discipline approach.
