I had an LP shunt placed last Monday and am very thankful to say as soon as I woke up I could see clearly and have been seeing that way since. Thank goodness for old posts! I have had lots of questions about how and why and is this ok and by searching old posts its saved many extra posts.
However, I have a question that I haven't been able to find yet, sorry for any over sharing. After surgery the dr had me taking a stool softener to help keep me somewhat regular. Unfortunately, it wasn't until Saturday after taking some laxatives I was able to go at all. Since then everything has been extremely loose but I am bloated. I mean, it looks like I'm six months pregnant. Today I also feel just generally weak and wimpy. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Any suggestions?

I'm so glad your vision is better! that's great.
I am sure that they gave you heavy doses of steroids and antibiotics, and this probably disrupted your normal flora which could cause loose stools and bloating. if you have a plug somewhere that might cause things to still be backed up, and for loose stools to go around it. as far as the weakness goes, hard to say that could just be recovering from the surgery. I would think that if there was a problem with the end of the shunt in your abdomen that you would be having severe pain, as in a peritonitis. I would call your doc just to check in with them. sometimes that pregnant look can be from fluid in the abdomen and I have no idea if that might be a complication of the shunt.
besides calling your doc, if I were you I would be taking a lot of milk of magnesia, 1-2 tbsp. per day at least, as your laxative of choice and also a probiotic. myself I would probably take some Fluconazole, to kill off some yeast as I find the steroids make that grow.
