Yes, not being able to catch my breath is one of my #1 symptoms. I live with an everyday venous CO2 of around 13-15. The doctor says my body has compensated for it, but as a result I feel really cruddy. If it gets so bad I can't walk 10 feet I know to go into the doctor.
Sometimes I feel really weak, like I'm going to immediately collapse and pass out and my heart beats weird. That's a sign for me that things have gotten pretty bad. If this goes on for more than a day I get constipated, followed by prolific diarrhea. Then my CO2 level plunges really low and I need help fast.
Denial and not thinking straight is another for me. "I don't need to go to the hospital. Just give me a pill." Uh, no. Go somewhere that has on-the-spot test results, because things can go south really fast. Go to urgent care or the ER, or a lab with instant results. The test results will decide whether you need to be in the hospital or not and what your treatment needs to be.
I take what actions I can at home, when I can. I'll drink like a gallon of diet lemonade. (treat the acidosis with citrate) I'll take a few extra potassium for a few days if I feel like I need it. I load up on potassium rich foods. If I have diarrhea or nausea I take something for it (to prevent potassium loss). Under my doctor's advice and care I've eaten bicarbonate of soda (ick, ick, ick). I think I've been able to avoid trips to the ER most of the time now, but I still feel like cr*p and am exhausted and have trouble breathing most of the time. Still, if it helps headaches it's worth it.
Get your blood tested, okay?
