A combination of one flat, dense pillow and three fluffy ones.

A. If so do you sleep with a mouth piece. No, but I own one.
B. do you grind your teeth. Some, but not bad.
~ Yes to both!
2. What type of pillow(s) do you use
~ I currently have one of those "My Pillows" (as seen on TV). It's okay...a bit better than a regular pillow, but I still have to constantly fluff it at night. I don't do well with the memory foam pillows for some reason. I've even tried a buckwheat pillow, which was way too hard. My quest for the perfect pillow continues...
3. What position do you sleep in
~ usually side, sometimes back
4. Do you sleep with a cpap machine
~ I'm supposed to, but had to turn the machine back in to the supplier. I couldn't use it because my allergies are so extreme, I had problems breathing with it on. I would end up just ripping it off my face.
A. If so do you use a full face mask or nose?
~ The one I had was a half mask thing. The one with just the nose piece wouldn't work. The full face was too much for my claustrophobia. So, it was the half mask that covered nose and mouth. (by the way, that mask would end up putting a dent in the bridge of my nose - ouch!)
B. were you diagnosed before or after iih diagnoses?
~ sorta at the same time as I was put through a heap of tests within a 2 month period of time. It was like, "oh you have IIH, and sleep apnea, and migraines, and possible ms, and a hiatal hernia, and endometriosis, and a liver hemangioma, and, and, and...
5. Do you have tmj?
~ I don't think so.
B. do you grind your teeth
~ I clench my teeth when I'm stressed and have woken myself up with grinding them, but it doesn't seem to be an everyday thing. My dentist hasn't noticed any significant damage to my teeth, so I guess I'm good.
2. latex pillow.
3. prone or side. sometimes end up on my back but not consciously
4. used to sleep with BiPAP before I had jaw surgery to try to cure my OSA. it's mostly gone. and my IIH is WAY better also.
5. I was diagnosed with OSA prior to IIH. I'm glad I was because I think it's the only way I would have understood the relationship of OSA to IIH. even before I knew I had IIH I had concluded that something very bad was happening when I slept, and that it was making my brain swell. if I was diagnosed with IIH first I never would have figured out the OSA part as I had to go to Stanford to get diagnosed. I would have ended up with a shunt. I probably had pap before I started CPAP. now I have foreign bodies in my jaw but at least not in my brain. I used a nasal mask, couldn't tolerate the full face mask.
5. yes I HAD TMJ before I had jaw surgery. it made it impossible to use the CPAP because keeping my mouth closed for the nasal mask brought out severe jaw pain. if my mouth is closed without a bite block I will clench. before I knew I had OSA, I would wake up on my back sweating and grinding my teeth. bruxism (tooth grinding) is known to be associated with OSA and has been cured with tonsillectomy in children.
mouth breathing in childhood leads to an increased vertical development of the face (face grows down not forwards) which leads to an anatomy that favors OSA, TMJ, and I think it will also favor compression/decreased drainage of the jugular veins, something recently found to be present in IIH. and so we see all of these conditions together and it may be as much that this anatomy causes all of them together as it is that OSA causes IIH and TMJ. my theory after much study of these subjects.
- yes, daily and the neck pain is worse. I was told I have neck arthritis and I think I need a neck MRI because there could be csf blockage that Dr's haven't thought to check.
