I just found out today that I have renal tubular acidosis.
I've been on Diamox a lot over the last three years and am wondering
if it is the cause of my new kidney issue. My dr. says it's hereditary, but I read that acetazolamide can cause RTA too.
I'm going to get to my neuro-optho asap to see about getting off
the Diamox. I've done Lasix before with ok results. Maybe we can go back to that. They are going to retest my urine in 3 months to see how the RTA treatment is working.
Can anyone reassure me that this is reversible?

I also have renal tubular acidosis, in my case caused by the Diamox. It causes metabolic acidosis on a chronic basis now, mostly compensated. In other words, my body has adjusted to it, where my CO2 is really screwed up and low but my potassium and arterial blood gasses are now okay.
I still have side effects. I'm constantly thirsty, eat tons or salt (or I get dehydrated), find it hard to breathe, and sometimes my heart beats a little funny, I think Diamox adds to my confusion and sleepiness, and worst of all are the many kidney stones. But overall I'm okay with it. More okay than when my headaches were a 10 most of the time. Now they are better than that. Not gone, but better.
I see a nephrologist who guides my Diamox and potassium citrate ER dosages. Since my body has compensated he says he doesn't see a need to take me off. I don't know for sure if it is reversible if I stop taking Diamox, but we think so. Right now the benefits of Diamox outweigh the detriments so I stay on.
Do you see a nephrologist? I'm guessing yes, but if no, it might be a good idea to consult one.
most important thing is to find a new doctor because yours is an idiot to tell you it's hereditary when you are on DIAMOX. jeez.
now there is proximal RTA and distal RTA and they test out differently so maybe he thinks he knows it's not proximal, but it's not always that straightforward.
but everyone who takes Diamox has some of this and it's kind of overly dramatic to give you a diagnosis of RTA when it's just a drug side effect. he's upset you for no reason.
I do hope it's nothing more than
a side effect issue. We will see
what my urine is like on the next
batch of testing.
