If the shunt is working the way it is suppose to work then you should not need to take any meds. Some people end up needing to take meds because their shunt is not pulling off enough fluid and they may need another shunt or they are in shunt failure and need to take the meds because they need something to take some of the pressure off. (I am an example of the shunt failing). I use to have an LP shunt but now am a proud owner of a vp shunt. If you have any other questions let me know :)

I meant to add that they may need another shunt along with the shunt they have or a shunt with a high pressure valve (pulls off more fluid than a medium pressure valve). Your NS should be able to judge what kind of valve you will need based on your LP opening pressure, but sometimes they misjudge what valve you need and so you end up like the first incident I mentioned. Hope this makes sense.

This is kind of a hard one for me to answer. Immediately after having my VP shunt done, I had no symptoms for 10 glorious days. I was taken off Diomax but as my pressure remained high , altho the shunt was working perfectly, I had to go back on Diomax.Since then, 3 years ago, i have been back on and off it 3 if not four times. I get kidney problems from Diomax so I have to come off for a few months to give my body a rest.
So, in short, sometimes, the shunt is not enough if your body produces so much csf and you have to fall back on Diomax. Cath

YES absolutely! I have been med free since I had my VP Shunt put in! All I take is Levathyroxine for my thyroid and fioracet for headaches!

Thank you so much for your replies. I'm so hoping I can be off of Diamox with a shunt. I guess I'll just wait and see what happens!
