After getting it, make sure you know exactly what brand and model you are getting so you can look up what it is sensitive to. I found out the hard way that mine gets reset by any kind of magnetic machines. Some don't react to magnets unless they are in direct contact with them. I worked in a factory setting, and I used demagnification machines, and I would mess up the setting on my shunt a lot. Oh, and MRIs mess my shunt up as well, so always make sure that you let the dr know that is ordering it that you will need to have your shunt adjusted after the test is done. There are some shunts out there that are sensitive to big speakers, like those at concerts, but you have to be right on top of them to have any effect on your shunt.
Other than that, just take a deep breath and try to relax. The surgery isn't as bad as we all build it up to be before we get them. Oh and after you get the shunt, remember that if you have any dental work you will need to take antibiotics before your cleanings or anything, for just in case purposes. Also you will need to let any dr know about the shunt for that purpose, you never know if they will require you to be premedicated with antibiotics before anything. It has always been fun to get X-rays done and I forget to tell them that I have a shunt, because they will see the tube in your abdomen and not know what it is. I always try to tell the techs, because some of them look at the image confused thinking they have messed it up.
Good luck with it all, and it will all work out. Ask tons of questions, and if there is something that doesn't seem right call your dr, nothing is ever ridiculous, it is your body only you know what you are feeling.
Thanks
