Hi guys. I'm new here. I have had headaches for many years, but just got officially diagnosed with PTC/papilledema/iron deficiency anemia this year all in the same month of May. My spinal tap last year had normal pressure but was given diamox anyway for 6 months with no change in headaches, so I stopped. In May this year, I finally got a diagnosis of PTC/papilledema from opth ultrasound and also labs showing iron deficiency anemia. My ferritin was only a 7, almost no iron stores, but still had only slightly low hemoglobin at 10.9. After 2 weeks of iron at 3 times per day, my headaches resolved about 80% and ALL of my neck/shoulder muscle spasms were gone. The tinnitus also resolved most of the way and my eyes lost most of the surface discomfort/redness. My MD Anderson hematologist said the ferritin goal is 50plus. I'm about at a 30 now and probably going to get a hysterectomy to stop heavy cycles that are making it hard to get the iron stores up higher. I know the list of suspected causes of PTC is long, but I think it is worth checking the FERRITIN particularly. There are several cases of healthy kids and adults having PTC resolve when their anemia is corrected. I looked over many past labs I had kept over the years from various specialists who couldnt figure out exactly what was wrong with me and not one Dr. ever ran a ferritin/anemia panel on me despite severe fatigue/headache.
