Dont know much about diamox. Daughter is on topamax but it too is a carbonic inhibitor (sp). And one of the major side effects is ulcer/stomach symptons like you described. We just got through an endoscopy to make sure it wasnt something else and they think it is just a side effect. But it is quite painful. Burning pain. She says it is constant.

Seems like they increased your dose alot at one time. I would they they would of done it in smaller increments? Like up to 750 then to 1000.

I'm sure more will post with more helpful information. Just wanted to let you know I feel for you cause I know how painful this is for my daughter.

I looked it up and Diamox is also an carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. hummm, i wonder. but sometimes i feel i over react to much since my dx. maybe ill just give it a few days. Does anyone know if Diamox has been know to cause ulcers?

I started on 1,000mg a day of diamox. I didn't have tummy problems. I was never hungry and hand numbness in my face. Also my feet n hands would go tingle. After I was on it for alittle bit the side effects weren't as severe. Hang in there....the medicine does work.

April, once again, this is something we all react differently to.
When I was taking Diamox, I had terrible tingling all the time. It made me very clumsy.
But I got used to it. Also, my hands and feet were always cold.

Two things that really did cause a problem were,I had a history of an ulcer and the Diamox kick started it again. I was taken an anti acid drug, Protium, and still am.

I also had so many kidney infections. About one a month. When I came off the Diomax , the infections became less and less until, now, and I am fine.

It takes at least 6-8 weeks to really get the hang on the drug. But it does get easier.Even tho I had symptoms, I could live with it.
Just bear in mind, it will save your eye sight.
You will get plenty of sympathy here, from us about it all! Cath.

i just got bumped up to 2000 mg last week. My stomach also feels that way. It posses me off cause for me it dioesnt even help with symptoms. I hope it gets better for u!!

Diamox is actually used to treat stomach ulcers, so I'm not sure that it would cause one. But it could definitely be upsetting your stomach- too much, too fast, you know? Could you call your pharmacist/doctor (whichever one is more accessible) and ask about increasing the dosage more slowly, or a way to stop the ick :-/

Watch this close, that is exactly how I felt when I went up to 1000 a day. Even the same words kiser to describe it lol.

By day 3 I had blood in my stool and o had started coughing up blood as well. But that was Friday morning of Christmas weekend and I didn't want to "bother" anybody.

By Monday the bleeding had really gotten out of hand. well you get the picture. So be very carful and communicate with your Dr and you support team

Diamox (acetazolamide) is used to treat altitude sickness in mountain climbers and is also used to treat intracranial hypertension/pt by lowering the amount of spinal fluid made. I've been on 2000mg since summer of '10 and am desperate to get off of it. Before that I was on 1500mg for 6 months, I found myself blaming all my symptoms on diamox. Don't make that same mistake! Today I saw my hematologist and found out I'm severely anemic. Been blaming tiredness on diamox. I know it has contributed to my symptoms but just be aware that it could be other problems causing your symptoms too. Stomach hurting is one of side effects but that should get better. Good luck!

I am posting this , just in case some one is not aware of this; If you are taking Diamox, you need regular blood testing. I mean at least every two months.
Like Sher, I suffer from anemia.I seem to have it all the time but it gets so much worse when I am on Diamox.
You also need to keep an eye on your liver, kidneys and hormone levels.
Diamox kicks the ass's off potassium, so you need to keep an eye on your levels.

Some drs can be very remiss about this. You must take this job in to your own hands, and remind them to do a blood screening regularly. Cath.

Wow..thanks for opening my eyes to some side effects to Diamox...
I had to see a GI doctor over the Christmas break for GI bleeding, he & my rheumatologist took me off of Arthrotec as the probable culprit..
Now, I am going to insist that they figure out if the recent bleeding and severe stomach pain is from the Diamox...
I don't know what to do, but my scope isn't unti 6 more days, and I don't know what kind of damage it could be doing to my insides.
Why does medication usually seem to cause more problems than the the ones it helps??
I must very sensitive to drugs, since every new medication makes me ill.
I've also had diarrhea and heartburn, but was already on an anti-acid drug for acid reflux, so it is hard to tell what is Diamox and what isn't....

have been on diamox 4 months and have the same symptoms... taking prevacid otc to try to stop the burning stomach and chest pain from the reflux. GI doc sweras up and down diamox isnt causing the reflux symptoms, but i sure do have them.
