Things are a little slow around here and I feel like writing so I thought I'd tell y'all a little bit about my recovery and this sad but true story has to do with a time in my life, about 6 years ago when I was heavily into narcotics. I had a good source of getting them so there was little chance I would stop on my own any time soon. I had chronic back pain and they helped me get through a strenuous day of work and made me feel good about it.
I though I might have a problem for some reason and I felt a little guilty and I was looking for someone to tell me I was ok, and not to worry!
So I went online and into this chat room for people in recovery and threw out a couple of hello's and told my story. Well the first person to answer me, and I always sought him out went I went back there, was an emergency room physician.!
I listened to what he had to say or read it I mean and I could not or would not believe that narcotics could do so much damage to my body and to my family, friends, and coworkers. Surely he must be exagerating I thought! I kept going back, looking for his approval and I never received it!
This was the first time anyone ever told me I am heading for disaster and I didn't want to believe the truth. I was still in denial. The truth hurt too much and reality for me was too painful to bare.
I was a frequent visiter to this chat room over a several month period but then I stopped going as my addiction continued to spiral out of control. What started as a few 5 mg vics to help me through the day quickly became a 150 mg per day habit!
Six years later, I am still picking up the messes caused by my addiction, having just gone through bankruptcy, but it is much better then the moral bankruptcy from my narcotic habit! Lies, cheating, stealing, are alright in the mind of an addict! I also got rid of all my drug friends which was ok because my new AA/NA friends were much more helpful anyhow.
Now I look to the future and a much brighter one at that. I only look at the past to remind me what will happen should I ever lose control. Control that AA/NA my sponser and counselors, helped me to regain.

Anyway, I'm scared that I have my first outpatient group with others tonight. I feel nervous walking into a group where I'll know nobody, or if I do know someone, how embarrassed I'll feel....

Zengal- How did it go? I remember walking into my first AA meeting 8 months ago. I was scared and dope sick-- not a pretty site! And when I walked in I saw my friend's ex!!! But in the 12th Tradition of AA we have promised to remain anonymous. So I'll never tell anyone about anyone or anything I hear in a meeting.
