I had an appt. with my new OB this morning and she says there have been some changes in the status of my cervix... I'm starting to dilate! I'll be 34 weeks on Sat. which is also the day of my baby shower! Needless to say, we're a little anxious over here wondering if all the contractions are Braxton Hicks or real ones, so we're timing everything and paying closer attention to all my aches and pains, etc.
One of hubby's friends recently had a baby and his wife was dilating for about 4 weeks before she gave birth. So I was just wondering, for those of you who have already had babies, how long after you found out you were starting to dilate before you actually went into labour?

I was 1 cm at around 34 weeks. At 36 weeks I was 3 cm. Then at 37 weeks I started having my first "real" contractions but they were coming about every two hours and were not strong at all. They got stronger towards 38 weeks and were coming every half hour. My doctor decided to induce me five days later because I was so tired and miserable from the contractions. I guess that means I had 5 weeks after starting to dilate before I went into labor, but I got induced, I didn't actually go into labor.

I started dilating at 37 weeks and went into labor on my own 3 weeks later.

I never dilated. During my last checks (with both my boys) I was closed. Then a few days later I went into labor. They both came on their due date.

With my last pregnancy I was dilated 2 cm for several weeks before I actually went into labor, but you will definitely know when those contractions hit, There wont be a doubt in your mind. Good luck

Thanks for the replies! I'm now under observation in the hospital because I'm 3cm dilated and fully effaced! Since I live maybe an hour from the hospital, they wanted me a bit closer because they think I could go into labour at any time now!

I've been in the hospital for the past week in the antenatal self-care unit since I'm now 3cm dilated and fully effaced with about an hour drive between home and hospital. Doctors keep telling me labour will happen any time now. I hope so, because I'm going nutty and not really eating much because the food sucks! I may end up losing weight from this stay, and I'm hoping the boys do ok with what little nutrients they're getting!
