Well, I've heard the old wives tale that a higher heart rate indicates a girl and a lower one a boy...for me that was true, but I don't think it's a guaranteed rule.

I know it can take my ob several minutes to find the heartbeat with a doppler, and my 15w appt was the first one that it was actually found on a doppler. Things like placenta placement, where the baby is, how quickly the baby is moving, and your tummy chub all make a difference on how easily the heart beat can be found.

I've also had my ob say that he was definetly picking up the heartbeat in bits before I could heart it...but he would continue to like chase the baby down until we got it locked in on the doppler.

I'm glad you get to have an u/s in a few days! That should be really reassuring and give you a chance to see AND hear that little baby! I'm with TruststheLord - all those factors she mentions can definitely play into finding the heartbeat via doppler. That's reassuring that she was confident she heard it - even if you didn't get to hear it too. Are you hoping for a little boy? My doc also told me there's a CHANCE I'll find out at my next u/s and I'm super excited!

When I went for one of my earlier visits prob. around 12 weeks, my dr. had a hard time finding it. I was freaking out and was like is there something wrong. She told me that the baby was moivng around so much that she couldnt get him to stay still. I only got to hear it for a few seconds.

We went on week 14 and my Dr. had a hard time finding the heartbeat so he took us in immediately for an U/S and found it right away. We had a hard time finding it when I was pregnant with my daughters too. Good luck :)

My first appointment was when I was just over 12 weeks along. I first went into have an U/S, so we got to see and hear it right there, but OMG when the nurse had to find it with the Doppler after the U/S she had such a hard time...I thought she was going to squash my insides!!

I am sure it's just the fact that right now your baby is still pretty small, and of course there are other reasons that people have already mentioned.

As far as the sex, I think that they can tell you what it appears to be at your next U/S, but I don't think they will give you a 100%. I went in for an U/S at almost 18 weeks and at that time it was obvious (she got the perfect "potty shot")...

Never heard that one before. I've heard of the one where they say that higher heart rate is a girl and lower one indicates boy - worked for me both times. But usually when they can't find the heartbeat is because baby is moving a lot or not in a good position to find it easily.

At 11 weeks, my doc was having a hard time finding it and he did a quick ultrasound (he has the machine there so it's not like I had to go to a different clinic).

Sometimes at 16 weeks they could tell the gender, but it's much more obvious at 20 weeks or so.

I have never heard that one before but the dr had a hard time finding the hb with both my pregnancies and I have two boys .

I heard my baby's hb with an u/s at 13 weeks. I not only got to see the baby, but I got to hear the hb too. :o)
