My wife and I are planning on TTC using AI at home in January. I've been looking up how to go about the procedure and it sounds a little complicated and I'm just worried that with ME being the one actually doing the procedure I'm going to mess something up. Has anyone ever done this before and if so is it complicated at all?? Is there some place online where we can go and get all the supplies or is a drugstore more necessary (safer) for this kind of thing?

Are you actually thinking of trying to pass through the cervix to implant the semen in the uterus?? Or are you simply going to use a turkey baster and place it in the vagina?

If an unskilled person tries to pass through the cervix, you are very likely going to puncture something and cause damage, possibly irreparable, and open up wounds that are susceptible to infection. This is not a procedure for an untrained person.

I agree. On top of injury, a lab will do a sperm wash to make sure that only the strongest are deposited. If the entire ejaculate is deposited in the uterus, it can cause very, very painful cramping. If done in an office setting, they will also be able to monitor your wife's hormones and cycle to make sure that everything is timed correctly. And I really don't think that it's a kit that you can just buy at the store. When we did iui, I was on meds to ovulate and was monitored closely. My husband went to the lab and made his deposit and they did the wash. I went in a little later and the nurse passed my cervix with a very small catheter. She did those every day but still had trouble. Not every vagina and cervix is text book.

Yes we were going to try it all on our own BUT I wasn't sure how to go about doing it, that's why I was seeking advice on here first. But if there's a high risk that she is going to get hurt I'd rather it be done in an office setting. Because I'm not trained for this kind of thing. I did not know how AI was done or if a trained professional was supposed to do it. We would like the highest chances possible of pregnancy, without her getting hurt of course in the process.

It really isn't something to mess around with. Even doctors are hesitant to insert things into the cervix, depending on certain situations. I tried to get an IUD before I'd ever had a child and the doc said my cervix was too tight and she wouldn't do it cuz she knew she could puncture a hole - and she's a trained professional. Granted an IUD is larger than what they use to inseminate with - but there is a huge risk of puncture if you don't know what you are doing. Not all cervix's are created equal, they can be tilted and not nearly as easy to pass as you might think.

I know fertility treatments can be costly but so can accidents/injuries.
