The only med my pdoc thought was potentially harmful was actually my antidepressant. (Effexor.) I am off that and weaning off my Lamictal, and Trazodone can cause miscarriage so I weaned off that even before I got pregnant, but I will stay on Risperdal for my whole pregnancy, probably. I saw a perinatal psychiatrist when I was TTC and she gave us the ok on it, plus I get to participate in a study about atypicals and pregnancy and help other women. Highly recommend finding a perinatal pdoc. She was wonderful and even though she is far away is working with my local doc over the phone.

OB's generally recommend you stay on your meds but it made me a little nervous.But you can't have a healthy baby without a healthy mama, you know?

Amen to that. I told my therapist how I'm feeling and he said to come in and see him today. Maybe we can discuss the possibility of meds with my psychiatrist.

That's a tricky dilemma. I had to go off all my medications once I became pregnant, but they were for my neurological disorder. As far as mental illness, I've been treating mine with therapy, meditation and exercise.

Generally, I think most doctors would rather you be well mentally because like halter said, you need a healthy mommy for a healthy baby. Good luck finding the best solution!

I'm 90% sure my psychiatrist won't put me on any. She was already against me being medicated before I got pregnant. She thought regular therapy would be enough. Something tells me this is not gonna change her mind one bit.

Personally, I'd bring it up to your ob-gyn. They will have more experience with the topic of antidepressants and pregnancy together. They will also be more likely to know which medications can be used with less risk.
