I was a major league control freak at my first therapy appointment in 1972. The stick up my ass had a stick up its ass. I was raised as the butt of every joke and knew myself as the person blessing counters were grateful not to be. Any efforts to laugh with me were met with the AssUmption that the sucker punch was on its way. Let's get straight to the punching part. . . Is it any wonder the U.S. Army liked me?
By the time the GI Bill paved my way into college, I was quite focused and driven to get what I wanted. It didn't take long after my return to the clan fold for that to spin psychotically out of control. With much therapy help, I got my college dreams back on track, but then came pregnancy and Daddy made three.
Fast forward a decade or three and I found myself unwilling to consider my personal wants at all. Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get. I decided to shoot for the happiness.
This morning finds me pondering a balance between the extremes. Opines welcome.

I got my trauma overseas as a downside to being a missionary kid in the third world. On the other hand I saw what humble beginnings can do to ground a person and not let them be blinded by that kind of big time success Gabriel sings about.
