Vindicated for being fired for PTSD!
mujicaptsd
Out of the blue today I got an email from the college where I taught in 2011 where I was suddenly and mysteriously fired. My kidney disease had made it impossible for me to take meds any more for PTSD, so I was taken off of them. I had a HORRIBLE time, but showed up for work and did my job. Still, I was in the closet about PTSD until I was too sick. Then when I asked for help I was laid off for "budgetary reasons."
Today I got an apology!!! Nothing I could take to court, but it's justice nonetheless. I'd gone on and gotten the job I'm in now that I've held for 3 years. From the start I here came out of the closet about my PTSD. I even speak at churches about it on weekends. I learned my lesson. Never again would I take a job, stay in the closet, and then let myself suffer discrimination when I asked for help too late.
Coming off of meds in 2011 after being on them since 1986 scared me, because I'd been hospitalized for suicidal feelings. I didn't know if I was a suicide risk in 2011 once off meds again. I spent many nights with white knuckles as I hung in there. My fiancee didn't and broke up with me in the midst of my worries back there in 2011. But I survived.
I never thought that in addition to surviving, I'd get vindication and an apology. Though I've never gotten an apology from the fiancee, but that's ok. Better off without fair weather friends. That personal blow while coming off meds as well as losing my job in 2011 nearly did me in, but I didn't kill myself, and I moved forward. Now, in time, I get some respect, too.
Martin Luther King said the world is a tough place, but that in the long run the universe bends toward justice. I've always chosen to bet on that, but out of respect to him. Never once out of my own personal experience.
Now I've had a taste of my own, and it really is good to get a little justice.

Upon his departure, he remarked, "I am in many people’s pockets; no one will believe you." Have you ever grappled with the silence that follows sexual assault, where the perceived impossibility of being believed necessitates self-censorship?
