Believe it or not, I'm at a place in my PTSD recovery in which teaching Death and Dying psych classes at my community college every day is a positive booster for me usually.
Not so much today. I showed the movie Tuesdays with Morrie. I thought that after the Fort Hood shootings yesterday, it would make a difference to uphold an example about how good it can be to be surrounded by caring friends at the end of life instead. It shows not only how wonderful Morrie was, but how his student Mitch learned to put his cell phone down and appreciate his own life a little more after sharing time with Morrie at the end of life.
The film ended, and my good students--really good people, I know them--were completely unmoved. They jumped right in to talking about how many points each test question would be worth on their next test.
I've seen Tuesdays with Morrie in class many times, and today while I watched it the film still touched my heart. But I'm out of touch with the times, I guess. I'm thinking about removing the film from my syllabus after today's lack of any response to its message.
Has anybody here seen it or read the book and did it touch you? Should I stop showing it to today's students?

Maybe people are too desensitized to media these days,
but it sounds like a good story for your class.

I think I was moved for about a week. I think I talked about it to anybody that would listen.
You who teach today's youth ... I am in awe of you. I don't think I could do it :-)
If it can't be captured on a Twitter post, it sometimes seems like it's not worth their attention.
Or was I that way, too, when I was their age ?

That said, I'm an old fart of 43.
I always enjoyed time with older folks and their talks about life and so on even as a teenager, so that book was wonderful to me....
I'm with David. If it's goign to involve more than a nanosecond of attention and doesn't come with a Twitter hashmark? Too many dismiss it as "takes too much effort".
Some of the best things in my life took the most effort. Marriage, friendships, regaining my mobility post-accident, education, work success....therapy for PTSD!....
I'd think it's a great story for your class, which I wish I could take. So sorry they didn't "get" it....
