awful week...
son's teacher is very upset over the fact he broke her pencil sharpener; he wanted to see what would happen if the eraser end was put in. He's already had detention as punishment and we paid the school $55 the next day. Then we had to go to a big teacher's meeting.
I really wanted to feel empathy for his teacher, but she has not talked to me about my son all year. She emotionally poured out her soul about her pencil sharpener and how she even felt her highlighters were threatened; she kept repeating "defiant behavior". She doesn't seem to feel much sympathy for my son, even though his grandfather and priest just died and his uncle has gone nuts. I guess pencil sharpeners are more important. I made him rake the yard to pay us back for the sharpener. But all that wasn't enough for the teacher. She had to have another pound of flesh.
I had hoped the school would give him the guidance and structure I couldn't, but now, I have to wonder if they really care. I got some points in: how she had not communicated with us, how I feel that his getting taller and his voice getting deeper this year has changed how he's being treated.
Ive made an appointment for him to see the therapist, but I'm not sure if the teacher was totally right.

Upon his departure, he remarked, "I am in many people’s pockets; no one will believe you." Have you ever grappled with the silence that follows sexual assault, where the perceived impossibility of being believed necessitates self-censorship?

Then (directed towards the school)...Really? Of all of the things that can happen in the world and they're getting upset over a pencil sharpener?
Is this a private school?
Much support & a hug
Stupid kid thing...yes.
Make great story one day...yes.
Oh I'd show up at the meeting all right. With a big milkshake and takeout steak dinner in hand. I wouldn't have to say a word...just let my actions speak for themselves. I have no problems being the "difficult parent". I wouldn't even "disagree" with what they were saying...I'd just say "I understand your point" and just keep repeating that. If they asked my opinion, I'd just say "well we're you didn't call me here change your policies...did you...so why does my opinion matter?"
***I've been through it FAR more than over a pencil sharpener with my kid and school Even got suspended in kindergarten. My son is now a kid that virtually every parent would love to have. Gets up and shovels snow without being asked, kind to his sister, etc, etc. I didn't get there by being harsh with him. I got there by bonding, bonding, bonding, bonding, bonding.***

Whenever my kids had the off the wall, totally nuts teach, I kept telling myself that it was only for a year and then she was gone. I also sat the kids down and told them I did not agree with her but we had to play by her rules and it was only for a year. It was a good lesson on life not being fair and having to deal with overly dramatic people in the world. We got through it together and by keeping the lines of communication open with the kids so we could talk about the issue and how to cope with them.
Understanding his issues, but still want to make sure he is being treated fairly
