my first head shave was 1995 at nearly 41 years old. yes, i am female. it is the only style of haircut i have had since. at 41, my hair grew bald to butt in 3 years. i shaved again. the feel of a brand new buzz is awesome and highly addictive. currently my hair is about waist length and i am thinking of another buzz. after 30 years, it is no longer radical for me. i am mostly humored and armed with comebacks for the stereotypical responses.
the radical piece i am grappling with today is that my 9 year old foster daughter is asking for a buzz. the school nurse sent her home with head lice AGAIN and shaving is the only known cure for head lice. this precious princess has been through so many head lice treatments that she is in tears over the thought of another. nobody else in the family gets them, but she seems to be a veritable incubator. she can barely tolerate a daily combing of her mega-thick, full bodied hair. combing nits is literally hair-raising. i dread doing it as much as she dreads the receiving.
hubs and i kept her home from school today. she loves school. she started asking for the shave last night rather than miss the day, but we convinced her to wait until we talked some more today.
sorting. . .

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

The only thing I would be concerned about re her shaving her head are the other kids
They can be so cruel at times and peers for children are often the be all and end all
What about a short styled doo?
with head lice, hairstylists are not an option, so she ended up with a sassy style of my own devising. i'm risking the sin of pride over this cut. my only qualification as a stylist is 24/7/any condition availability, but i think this cut came out nice for brass-ovaried engineer work. she will still have to face the boy jokes since ALL her female classmates have long hair.
i find myself re-writing ry cooder's song, "i'm a fool for a cigarette."
lord, we're all fools for a woman's hair.
lord, we're all fools for a woman's hair.
when we finish choking
from just trying to comb it
lord, we're all fools for a woman's hair.
Maybe some pretty hair jewellry to top it off?
Good for you Nana!
