Stress at work triggering PTSD
I went back to work teaching at my community college this semester after having had major surgery in December. The surgeon says I won't get my energy back to normal until 6 months post op.
This week I've had disrespect from 2 students in situations I was able to cope with fine while at work, but that left me carrying a lot of stress home. It triggered my PTSD, so I've have trouble with insomnia, one of my usual symptoms, and with dissociating, my other usual.
I confided in my best friend here at DS and that's been a big help, but I thought I might cast my net wider for support here, too, to get through the work stress better in the next few days. Any support is truly welcome.
PS-This week has made me look forward to retirement. Just 2 more years....

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

As for how some students behave in college...well it's been an eyeopener.
Working his way through college...my son gets annoyed by them even more than I do.
It sux the students are disrespectful to their teachers especially nursing students in a death and dying class.... I think that's troublesome
I'm sorry that you've had to go through this and that your boss has made it impossible for you to be able to comfortably discuss classroom situations with her …
Another hug..... I hope that you're able to have a peaceful evening...… xo
You are so very brave and strong to return to work after surgery and then stay composed after being disrespected. I’m so sorry you had to be subjected to such rudeness. It seems so much of the world has lost the ability to be empathetic and respectful. But there are some of us still left.
Hugs and continued support. You’re a continuous inspiration to so many of us.
As Vitava said so well "It seems so much of the world has lost the ability to be empathetic and respectful". Completely agree.
(((((((hugs))))))) Muji, you are a great person.
As I said before, I often come home with words and then have them bounce back and forth in my head. But I try to own them, the original words weren't mine, but my head is...the other person may be clueless to their affect.
Life is strange though. Things that start out go wrong, don't always end up being so bad in the long run.
***My son's frustration over damaging the car came up again today. The cost is a lot to him now...but in the long run, maybe not so much.***
I'm probably not explaining very well. It's sort of like the Buddhist sorry about the farmer and the horse. Although the Buddhist story is more neutral and I perfer to look for the good...

So, ya know, maybe this student was rude. But maybe another student saw it and decided to be nicer. And maybe that person was nicer to another person....
Anyway, things still bounce in my head. But the thought that good will come from stuff...comforts me.
All I can think of helpful to say is
keep using your tools and coming here for support.
And as the triggers subside you will rediscover your peacefulness
Sending hugs and support.
Remembering that is helping me let it go. I reserved a hotel room for a couple of nights in the city and bought a ticket to a live stand up comedian's show. I'm hoping to laugh it off.
I couldn't have done it without bringing it here, though. You're the ones in the world who understand how stuff like this can trigger PTSD and lead to a need for something like a weekend getaway from it to regroup. Other people might say it's silly to plan a getaway over something like that, but you know why it's not.
Thank you.
So on Friday I found his email saying "thank you for your honesty." He was indeed dropping the class to avoid a bad grade on record as I suggested so as to take the course again with a fresh start next time. He didn't apologize, but thanking me instead of blessing me out again was apology enough.
It was so good to come here to DS PTSD to relieve my stress when his Thursday emails blessing me out triggered me. The fact that I then got this thankful email was icing on the cake. But knowing I could bring my triggered PTSD stress here where people listen and understand helped me get to work in the first place.
It helped me teach all day without knowing if the student would settle down or not. Knowing I had this kind of DS PTSD support meant I could function regardless and do my job. Thank you for the support that helped me do that.
Now I can go to the comedy show tonight and enjoy it all the more. DS PTSD works for me, thanks to you.
At the hospital the therapists always said and "triggers are our friends". It's annoying but true. Try and keep track of what is triggering you so you can be better prepared for it later. Sounds like you got through the week well. I hope you enjoyed the comedy show. Big HUGS!
