Here is an article that caught my eye, and reminds from whence I came.  I worked with the Teams and had much higher access to mental health than the rest of the military.  The mental health stigma is greater in the military than civilians, but in SpecFor, it is generally less as everyone goes into the see the shrink after a deployment.  So there are lots of people coming and going so it doesn't sound that weird to be going into a PDoc or TDoc.  At one of my jobs, I worked a command that had over 65% of all Special Forces deaths in the entire military... at one command.  I went to so many funerals, and it was very sobering.  I knew several that fell.  A few others took their own lives, and they were honored just like if they fell in battle, their wounds just took longer to kill them.  Once a year on a special anniversary date for the command, the names of every person that was killed as read at a memorial.  The command funded for the family to come to the ceremony from anywhere on the planet.  Very sad.  Also, a foundation would pay off their house and pay for the children's college costs.  The teams also deploy with dogs ("hair missiles"), and when they died in battle, they were treated the same with a memorial, name reading and their name etched in stone.

That’s heart warming to read. I’m not from the US but it’s great to hear they are actually looking after some of their heroes. I really love the dogs are honoured to. They give so much without asking why.

Looney - on the puppies, they like to play hide and seek and they are really really good at it. When the dogs are a few years old, they retire from service and are adopted by people at this command or connected with the command. I really like walking by the war dog memorial. I would see them they trained out on the roads. beautiful animals.

That's good news to hear that vets' PTSD needs are being addressed by the government like that, finally. Hey, three guys I work with at my community college are PTSD buddies with me. We've not only got PTSD in common, but PTSD from service in corrections. I was a halfway house director for 40 federal ex-felons and they did 20 years each in corrections in our area's state maximum security prison. They weren't just tier guards, they were on the SWAT team, a SWAT team that saw major action in a big 3 day prison riot we had here in 1995.

Do you hear any good news about PTSD care for my guys, too?

I think this is so important...… How could anyone not come back from war and not be mentally damaged

My PTSD stems from man's inhumanity towards man. Some day I will be able to post about it. It came in several different events but the inhumanity is the central driving characteristic.

A prison riot would be very traumatizing. Many of the inmates know they will never get out so there is nothing to lose in more killing. Hurting the guards would be a great status symbol for them. It is like you are in combat having to watch your back every day.

You're right on, Thor, and my buddies at work served in the military first before going in to corrections to their their 20, so you can imagine the immense respect I have for them.

My city is the poorest city in my state, so volunteer service in the military is higher here than in some others. The factories closed in my area, but the state built a maximum security prison after that. That's why my community college started teaching career courses for corrections officers and my buddies got hired last year when they retired after finishing their 20.

I only have been inside the state maximum security prison once where they worked every day for 20 years. I was hired to translate and mediate for a Salvadoran gang leader from MST-13, a real tough guy. He was causing them lots of trouble, as you can imagine a guy with that kind of gang power could in a prison.

After a couple of visits translating for him, we got the issue resolved. He was under death threats in general population, probably in response to those he himself had made to others. We got him transferred out to another prison elsewhere in the state, and general population calmed down again.

But calm is a relative word. During the time I was in there translating, the place was loud all the time. It was like standing all day next to a jet airplane on the tarmac of an airport. The din from screaming and shouting rage never stopped day or night. That alone would be enough to cause a person PTSD. It sure triggered mine.

And then they went through that 3 day riot on top of that. These guys are not soft in any way, but there's no way they don't have PTSD. Yet here they are, after retirement still preparing future officers at my community college.

Thanks for giving me the chance to sing their praises, Thor. I don't mean to hijack the thread you started. I'm just glad folks who served abroad and serve at home may be getting their due they earned from the government after their service.

Muji -You didn't highjack anything. There are many people that serve our community. They put themselves in danger for the benefit of all. Service like this takes a toll on a person. PTSD is just one of the expressions. Being a prison guard, I think would be very difficult and extremely dangerous. You are inside with the inmates and there is a whole lot more of them than you.
