Noticed that I am ruminating and feeling quite anxious about the suggestion of a psychiatrist today. Therapist was concerned when she asked me how long I have had nightmares and I told her as long as I can remember and even as a kid. It started when I told her that I was just very tired at the start session and she agreed that I looked very tired. I mentioned that I have had nightmares multiple times a week since I was young. She traced my trauma history and determined that it spanned from at least age six to 18 with trauma as an adult in an abusive marriage. Primary care gave me seroquil which helped in the beginning but I am less sensitive now. I am going to again try to get him to prazosin but if he won’t I might need to ask him to refer me to a psychiatrist. Feeling exhausted and scared. I am really uncomfortable hearing my abuse history. It tends to make me dissociate and triggers the negative thoughts and self-harm. Even typing this I am wanting to punch. Maybe I try the bag quietly. Hoping for tips!

Happy Happy Birthday to an absolutely fabulous guy!!I hope that you have an absolutely fabulous day of celebrating you my friend!!..xo
I started with my primary care and then got the therapist and then the psychiatrist too. I did eventually get the prazosin and it did help for a while but I think it might need to be upped again.
i have talked to people who take 2, 3 and 5 mg of prazosin for relief from night mares and those who take 1 mg as i do. it depends, as all medications do, on the person. i had thought to maybe ask for an increase but then, didn't need to.
i haven't noticed any side effects at all. i'm actually having REM sleep now, i don't know when i have had that as i have sleep apnea - it's been a very long time.
i hope you won't worry too much about talking to a psychiatrist - it is more scary thinking about it than it is to do it. mine is so nice, just another person in a nice dr's office like my counselor.
hugs xo
I encourage you to allow your therapist to decide that a psychiatrist help you manage these dangerous medications not a therapist! Always take time to go to the library somewhere quite and research this first, because you a not just a patient you are a 'Survivor' fighting to find balance in your life!
The battle is fought everyday, but together you and everyone here can help win the day and then confront the bigger battles ahead together reaching out for help! No one should feel they are alone in the fight ever; just reach out and another will stand by your side in your daily struggles! Be well Kate!
