People do not understand.

No one understands PTSD, no one understands that when you've been sexually abused you have to cope with the ordeal for the rest of your days even though it's over. Whenever I open up to my friends who've had normal upbringings they try to understand but I feel like they think I'm crazy and just need move on.

I also have cancer, and surprise surprise everyone is up my shitter giving me support, love, and telling me how brave I am.

If only people would see mental illnesses like they do cancer, everything would be so much nicer and easier then.

I am sorry you are hurting. It's tough, but if you tell a nice, compassionate person in a way and a situation that they might be able to relate to, then maybe they will understand a little bit. Sometimes it just takes some patience to figure out a way to let them know what we are going through and how we are feeling. May God be with you as you heal from the cancer and PTSD.

Alex, I can't really argue what you're saying, alas. The horrible part of the dx of "mental" illness is this ridiculous assumption our bodies aren't involved, so it's not as "legitimate".

That said, healing to you, and prayers for your health and well-being. Mental and otherwise.

No they don't understand and I don't understand what it would feel like to have cancer

People can empathize though and I'm sorry if you've been hurt by your friends... I find coming to a place like DS or peer support of some type is often more fulfilling when it comes to support

Some people don't know how to handle a discussion about abuse as well as a mental health disorder... They don't know how to respond or how to help... There is unfortunately still a stigma

Ditto what SC said, they don't understand, and what she said is about how it's a double problem is so true. We're telling them about a violent event, which is hard enough for them to take, and about its mental impact afterwards, too. Not many people are equipped to hear just one or the other. A minuscule number is equipped to hear both at once. That's why I feel lucky having people here to talk to.

Yeah, cancer does get more positive attention, although sometimes that can depend on where in the body the cancer is, I've found.

Hi Alex, I often have this discussion with my therapist... people just don't get it... and at times I can try and understand "Why" ? However it's very disturbing... well to me it is... how they can be all over you for a "Physical Problem " but yet mention depression... that is now PTSD and they think you can just get over it! Blessings!

    Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
