off topic nerd alert


my inner etymologist (ie) is obsessing again. ie is like a beaten crazy bitch wolf with a juicy bone. she just won't let go.


is, "i hope this helps" an internet phrase? social media? i don't recall ever hearing/reading the phrase until the early 21st century, a goodly while after the internet boom of the 90's. nor do i recall hearing/reading it anywhere but social media.


anybody? ie wants to know. she's a pushy little psychodevil.


note: i'm counting support sites, such as daily strength as social media

I swear it started with IT, but that's my perception. "Hope this helps!" was never a good sign after I'd read an e-mail in e-gibberish about why exactly the intranet was down. To this day, my relatives in IT sign off like that almost as if it took over "Sincerely, Name". I was on early social media support site, and we never used it, but the tech guy did.

And it rarely helped.

So that's my angle on it, such as it is, pre-2003 or so.

thank you, leo. i am working with a damaged memory and wasn't at all sure i was remembering correctly.

seems i most often find it attached to unsolicited advice.

It may well be an internet phrase... I can't remember when I first heard it....

People can't see expressions or hear tones of voice so stating that they're trying to be helpful may be a person's way of stating that they're trying to help and not harm especially if the comments may be a little 'strong'

I just looked it up and there are several phrases that mean the same thing that have been popular for I don't know how long but apparently HTH is an internet 'thing'.... Hope this helps... smile... wink!

the words are common and the spirit is as old as human culture, so i'm far from sure if i've noted it right. i hadn't bumped into the HTH biz. IMO, that verily seals the digital connection. winking back. . . WTF. LOL

    Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
