There has been a string of rainy days over my urban homestead. Super nummy stuff. Desert rain is always worthy of celebrating, especially in August, but the chickens (14 of them) sure make me feel guilty on rainy days. I still haven't unlocked they mysteries of chicken keeping well enough to have established a dry hang out for them. They get extra insistent about hanging out on the porch with me. Normally I don't allow it because chicken shit on my porch is not my favorite thing about keeping chickens. I keep a stash of throwing rocks on my table to chase them off. No. I don't hit the birds. Hitting the ground or an object near them is plenty to chase them off. They really are "chicken," after all.
On rainy days, every rock I throw is pure, guilt-laden torture. Poor things get so wet and scraggly looking. Here on day three of this rain I find myself better able to brace for chicken shit outside my kitchen door than able to chase them back out into the rain. I don't know whether to climb up on a cross or go kamakazi. . .
There were only two chickens on the furthest reaches of the porch when I started this tirade. All 14 of them are now huddled in the corner in front of the kitchen door and the honey harvest room door. That's allot of chicken shit. . . One of them just hopped up on the table. Wonder if I need to post bio-hazard warning signs for the human traffic. . .
Just sharing. Puns allowed.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

The only thing worse than a mean dog....is a friendly wet one!
***best of luck with your flock***
Poison picking time? Poor me.
Really, the extreme weather is the only time it is a real issue. During moderate weather, they prefer scratching around the yard. In extreme heat, they like that same corner because of the AC that leaks through the 2 doors. It is the driest outside corner of the house when it rains. I have tried building chicken-sized dry spots around the half-acre yard, but sometimes I think they are like my support dog. They, too, want to be lap dogs during a thunderstorm.
