OT Penguins & the end of the world
mujicaptsd
This is Off Topic (OT), I know, but it's Friday and next week I leave for my trip back home to Uruguay. Because I teach at a community college, I always go in July, never in January. Because Uruguay is deep down in the Southern Hemisphere (think Australia and South Africa), that means I never go home in the summer any more (January) but always in the winter (July).
Upside down world, huh?
I really wish I could go some time in February, because, like Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, my hometown of Montevideo is Carnaval central that month every year (think New Orleans and Mardi Gras). In New Orleans a Mardi Gras group is called a "crewe," in Montevideo it is called a "murga." My favorite murga is called Agarrate Catalina. They crack me up with their perfect singing of song lyrics that are satirical. I love when they help us make fun of ourselves as Uruguayans.
Example: "it's good to be from an underdeveloped deep South American part of the world where trends from North America take years to reach us. That means when the world ends, we won't know about it until years after everybody else, see? After the world ends, what will be left will be the cockroaches and us Uruguayans from the bottom of the world who didn't get the news."
Cracks me up.

But, alas, July is when I'm blessed with the time to go visit, so I have to enjoy Uruguay's wintry offerings. The coolest one of them is the migration of Antarctica's penguins to Uruguay's coasts in July. No kidding--penguins from the South Pole come up to Uruguay's beaches in July. They are extremely cute, although they don't make good pets--they bite. I found that out for myself as a kid.
So here's to the Penguins of Uruguay and seeing them next week!

Which explains the mysterious fevers and my extra fatigue. I'm so glad I pushed for answers.

Due to my increased paranoia, anxiety, and a panic attack over the weekend, my psychiatrist has put me back in a full dose of Zyprexa until further notice. Every time I think I'm getting ahead something happens and it's back to square one. I knew he was gonna do this but I can't help feeling disappointed. It is what it is.

That song reminds me of my BFF's comment on our home "town". To wit, "I don't know why our dads worry about nuclear war, even fallout couldn't find (here) on a map."
Oh, the penguins... Lovely.... Now I have Morgan Freeman narrating in my head. Hmmm....
So psyched for you! :-)
I arrived for my biology studies in Ecuador in January. Everybody kept throwing water at me and it played into my culture shock like a racist taunt. Turns out throwing water at people is one of the Ecuadorian Carnaval traditions. I sure was relieved when somebody explained that to me. If they really like you, they throw some flour on your wet skin. Kinda glad nobody liked me enough to waste food on me. Not for the first Carnaval, anyway. Yup, Carnaval in South America is an experience to remember. In Germany, it is called, "Fasching." Definitely fun to watch the tight asses let their guard down.
But penguins on the beach sounds worth seeing, too. I'd kinda like to see that one, myself, in person. No disrespect intended to Morgan Freeman's soothing narration voice. Make me want to lay down and get submissive. . .
Hope the Southern Winter treats you well, muji. I know I am green with envy.
In the meantime, here's a video of feeding time at the Uruguayan rescue and rehab center for penguins who get hurt during the winter migration to Uruguay's shores. It's hilarious. I've hand fed fish to penguins myself. It's one of the cutest things in the world, honestly.
