At what point does it stop being acceptable for someone to attempt to excuse their bad behavior by using their diagnosis?
I am not talking specifically about PTSD.
Here is an example. I will make up a fictional diagnosis because I don't want anyone to feel targeted.
Diagnosis: Vulcanitis Asshatus
Symptoms:
1) pointing out the obvious
2) insensitivity (responding to a person's emotional pain by pointing out how "messed up" they are)
3) Broken Filter Syndrome: BFS
4) The most damning of all: Self Awareness
The sufferer of Vulcanitis Asshatus will often make claims that they are aware of their illness. Furthermore, they can accurately describe how their behavior appears to others as well as the effect their behavior has on others.
Those with Vulcanitis Asshatus are not the only offenders.
Included in the list of major are people who suffer from the ups and downs of Skittle-Brussels Syndrome.
The folks can often be heard invalidating others and making fun of others pain. This is usually done in the Skittles Phase. It is often accompanied by abundant amounts of laughter. Once again they will proclaim self awareness and blame this insensitive and dismissive behavior on the Skittles. No apology is ever offered because, according to the sufferer, "it is how they roll".
It is important to remember that not all people with these disorders show these traits but some do.
If someone is self aware that what they are doing and/or saying is wrong or hurtful yet it continues without remorse because it is not their responsibility, it is the disease, has it ceased to be a true symptom?
(Sorry for the run on , convoluted sentence)

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Wait, is it my asshatus? Oh dear....
I have an appreciation for the ignore button but often wait before using it. I sometimes end up learning something valuable about myself and my reactions or triggers. Other times it's just...well...you know :-)
There's a point where the explanation of "I have xyz" becomes a sort of weapon against the world "I have xyz (so I can do anything and you have to suck it up)"....
LOL, I try to keep my ass-hat sized *small*.....
Realistically though?
People will get hurt anyway and people will go away, because they can't deal with the brain cooties.
No real "get out of jail free" cards.
**Trigger warning** (and rather crude, but true)
Once when we were on a trip from South America to the US she had one of her "spells" in Ecuador. She got the hotel manager to call an ambulance to take her to the ER. Really, she was mad at my father and wanted an audience to humiliate him in a setting where she could be a patient and therefore not accountable.
So at the hospital, when the doctor and nurses were gathered around her hospital bed, she called my father over to her bedside. In front of us kids, the medical staff, and God and everybody, she reached out calmly and grabbed my father's scrotum through his trousers and twisted until he fell down.
Ballbuster with her illnesses, my dear mum. Literally. In a similar classification as the Asshatus you mention. Not so much with the care for others. I hobbled around on a broken leg for half a day before I got taken to the hospital myself when I was 9.
Same when I broke a toe when I was 15. And those are rather obvious injuries. If your feelings were hurt, that was invisible, too, so it mattered less than broken bones. Likewise if you had any problems with the fact that we lived in a war zone or that she and my father had physical fights once a week. Those things were even more invisible than a broken bone, too.
So to this day the only person who ever was hurt in our family was dear old mom. On every visit she'll go on and on about her latest diagnoses, and ignore you even if you were on fire right in front of her. For real.
Kinda crazy case of Asshatus.
