This happened just 30 minutes ago.  I was driving on the interstate on my way to a routine eye doctor's appointment near where I live when suddenly a pickup truck right in front of me jerked left at 65 mph from the right lane we were both in single file, him in front and me right behind.  He veered all the way in front of me and then across the passing lane.  I don't know how he did that and didn't hit anybody.  He kept going until he slammed the full side of his pickup truck against a middle concrete dividing wall so hard that besides pieces off the whole left side of his pickup truck flying off, the entire rear left wheel of his pickup truck broke clean off, too, just like a toy.

With that he veered right, still going over 60 mph, now back across the passing lane without hitting anybody again, miraculously, and then right across in front of me where he started.  But now he kept veering hard right until he hit the bluff at the right side of the interstate just as hard as he had hit the concrete median dividing wall when he'd cut at high speed all the way to the left.  Once he hit the bluff in front of me to the interstate's right, more pieces of his pickup truck flew all over, this time from tearing off the right side of his truck.

It was like watching a movie, only this was no video game or cinema stunt.  I was the first guy to stop, and all the other cars behind me had to stop, too, if for no other reason than that there were pieces of truck littering all lanes of the interstate now.

An elderly genteman who looked to be about my age got out of the wrecked pickup truck's cab and staggered around stunned, which was actually good news.  He was conscious and there didn't seem to be any head trauma or bleeding on him.  The driver of the pickup truck behind me and I made sure to call 911 and then wait for the emergency vehicles to get there.

They've come and gone now, and now I'm left with that feeling I recognize from when I was an ER chaplain in Chicago.  Our medical center was near the I-55 cloverleaf for the city, so we got quite a few automotive vehicle traumas into our ER.  My job as ER chaplain was to be the first one in line in the ER.  I was the person who actually had to open the ambulance door and see the incoming patient transferred without going into shock to the gurney behind me and the doctors and nurses for emergency treatment.  You never knew what you'd see when you opened that ambulance door.

This fellow looked none the worse for wear considering the magnitude of the bouncing around he did all over the interstate today.  But I wonder if he didn't lose control like that because he had a heart incident or a seizure.  It was odd how he was cruising along at 65mph like that and then suddenly jerked his steering wheel into a hard left turn full speed.  At the ER I imagine they'll check to find out what caused him to do that.

I'm ok, and I was calm during the whole incident, I'm glad to say.  However, I wanted to vent about it here right away so I wouldn't go around getting triggered by it the rest of the day.  I canceled that routine eye doctor's appointment and will reschedule it for another time.  Just out of superstition, I might drive a different route to my next appointment, too.
